Praise God, It's Spring Break

Spring Break !
Not sure what springbreak means to Harmony Korine, but to me, it means watching movies and going thrift-store searching and drinking coffee.
It will also involve grading, but patience- grading will happen at some later date. As of now, I am enjoying myself. I'm feeling satisfied, you might say....

Got an(other) album by AndraƩ Crouch and the Disciples today. That's right! Today! You are getting fresh-old tracks.
Above track is not wholly representative of their sound- most of it is a more standard gospel sound, and so not nearly so dance-ready as that song.

But hey, it's my goddamn goshdarn blog, and that is the song I most want to play. You know, I'm more a "The Disco is My Church", a "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" kind of guy. All their songs are quite good, a lotta power coming out of these disciples, but I'd most like to share this standout, if 'black-sheep', song.

Here are some of the liner notes, in case you are curious.
It is interesting that this, the first "Best of AndraƩ Crouch & the Disciples" album, should be released at this time. For this is an age in which wee are experiencing a nostalgic fervor across our country-- a yearning to recall some of the good-times from years past.

Needless to say, there is a nostalgic touch to this recording, too. The songs on this album are the songs that over the past years you have told us were your favorites. Most of these favorites bring back memories-- memories of difficulties and struggles-- but mostly times of great blessing and joy.

Our thoughts now are centered on the many people and friends around the world who have told us of the impact our songs have had on their lives-- praise God!

Isn't it present today as well, the thirst for nostalgia?
I think so; it would explain why all of America is flocking to my blog.

Elvis Presley is Not That Interesting

Oh! There is a yuletide star in the sky...

follow it, and you'll find, not a manger....
but Youtube videos! Of Charlie Rich and Elvis Presley!

"Well, I make it alright/
Monday morning to Friday night/
but oh...
Those Lonely Weekends".
Don't be 'so sorry Charlie'! Christmas is around the corner; then you have a few days off... so it's like Every Day is the Weekend! (...oh, ah, ... nevermind)

"you said you'd be good to me, said our love would never die/
said you'd be good to me, but baby-- you didn't even try".

I pulled this Charlie Rich sound out of my vinyl stacks for you, because I heard the following song on the ol' radio :

(live version of Elvis' "Blue Christmas")

Well, of course I heard this on the radio, 'tis the season, right?
Now I like this song, even though I have heard it a time or two. I once sang the most Elvis-y part ("bluuuuuuuuhuhuhuhuhuhuuue") to my cousins, some far ago Xmas, and it cracked them up. At least that is how I remember it!

Anyhow, Charlie Rich's singing and playing covers a vast swath of styles: country-gospel; rockabilly-y;

straight old country;

early RocknRoll or RnB (you know, with the "Blues" still in RnB).

But on "Lonely Weekends", as you can clearly see/hear, he is doing a little Elvis impression. And he's so good at it, and just flat out so good, as one YouTube comment said, "Who needs Elvis?"
Me, I couldn't be bothered to give Elvis coal for Christmas: I just don't care about him. But Charlie Rich? If you see a Rich-Record, for Christ's sake (it's his b-day after all), get me the damn thing!
What do you all think: please tell me someone else out there prefers Charlie Rich to Elvis.
Any takers?

Halloween- HalloNew Order Edition

Download "SkullCrusher" (BOO!) by New Order

New Order created the theme to a movie, called Salvation! (the exclamation mark is not mine), and the songs are all real gems.
The movie, is "maybe not" a real gem.
(although it does have Viggo and Exene Cervenka in it... wait, now I am thinking "maybe so" )
It seems to involve blackmailing a sham preacher... pretty Halloweenesque.

"Sputnik" is airy, atmospheric, like fog drifting around a car, coasting through a deserted back stretch of highway... with no driver!!! (scary)

It's movie music, you know, so most of these songs have zero words. Only "Touched by the Hand of God" has any.
"Sputnik" is the most clearly from a movie- it's 'filmic';
the other ones are that subset of New Order style which reminds you forcefully of Joy Division.

"Skullcrusher" is the one that sounds the very most like Joy Division; "Let's Go" is a close second.
Now, I like New Order when they don't sound like Joy Division, absolutely (we all do, right?!?! ),
but when developing a Halloween theme, by God, it had better sound like Joy Division.

Halloween!: Soft Cell-oween Edition

Okay, so you gotta play these back to back, okay? They run directly into each other on the album, so let's try to mimick that magick.

Fair warning: there are totally nipples in the sexdwarf video- actually, there is all manner of batshit shit going on- so don't try watching it at work. Ain't nobody need to get fired in "this economy".

If you've already been fired, fantastic! Because not only musically and lyrically, but also *visually*, these videos are a match for the current Halloween theme.

(love that line: "luring disco dollies to a life of vice")

These songs come off the Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret album. This album has "Tainted Love" on it, but it is no exaggeration to say that every song on this album is good. So if you see it in a record bin, don't be scared to buy it.

By the way, it looks like this:

Except bigger, you know? Like 12"x12".

Also, it doesn't fit at all with the Halloween theme, but Kyle might recognize this Soft Cell song too. But nobody else click on it! Promise?

Halloween- HalloWoman Edition

Halloween- yes! The best international holiday ever, easy.
(except for maybe Thanksgiving, which I just learned Canadians also celebrate)
(and except my birthday)

So to help you celebrate- because I'm a giver, see?- I will put up a slew of unholy holiday-related songs.
Now, this song musically is not so dark or spooky-ooky. But, it is by the great (late- that's sorta Halloween-ish) Marty Robbins.

(download Devil Woman- Marty Robbins as you watch below)

Now, you kids these days, with your John E. Cash, or what have you... Sure, he's who all those kids- who are demanding candy already- would post for their Halloween songs. Sure, sure, "Ring of Fire"- but you already know about that song. Lord, you probably already have that song! So I give you this instead.

Or rather, these instead:

(maybe you can snag that one too.

And this one, you just gotta hear.

Listen to it- it's nuts! It has killing, stampedes, lightning, Mexico, lightning which performs a miracle, and the face of Jesus Christ- the OG Zombie- Respek!

"Get [a post] On Down!", quick!

Just going to quickly put a few things "down" on "paper". The Dells are a really solid band.

They have a "The Sound Of Philadelphia"-type sound. In fact, one of their two lead singers has a gruff, take-charge voice, somewhat reminiscent of Teddy Pendergrass. (...that would not be their falsetto singer...)

See what Eddie Murphy has to say about TP's singing style here- you can see what kind of voice you will be treated to if you snag this track by The Dells.

That's raw, nawImean?
(I mean, the video is from Delirious- the joke, the voice, are raw. Sorry for the confusion: it has been a while.)

Un-Covered Melody

So I did pull off the masterstroke, the (bloodless) coup that I promised last post. And it's pretty grand. Pretty epic, like the better-known version of this song:

-- Please download this fresh-from-vinyl version, of Belafonte's version of "Unchained Melody" --
( I also have, all ripped from vinyl, Charlie Rich, Al Green, Ricky Nelson, and Sonny & Cher covers. I can post those, of you'd please. )

Of course, the better-/best-known version of this song is by the very righteous Righteous Brothers. And I post Harry Belafonte's version, not because their version lacks anything-
No, quite the contrary-
but just to show what changes Belafonte has wrought.

Margeaux and I were talking at her house (that's the coup, FYI), and she posited her general rule about covers:
Don't cover a song that you cannot improve.
I like this rule; it makes sense. If you just want to play the damn song, sure: play it. But to record it and send it out there, why?, unless you have done it one better.

Now, we could, with all good reason, say that nobody can improve on the Righteous Brothers' version.
However, in Belafonte's slowed-down version, there is a delicacy that is not present in the Righteous Brothers' version.

Oh And Also, I failed to mention this little historical tidbit:
Belafonte covered this song in 1956, on the album pictured above.

The Righteous Brothers covered it on this album, in 1965:

So Belafonte did not violate Margeaux's good rule about covers.

The original? It's from a movie about prison!, which is where the 'Unchained'-name comes from.
Oh, and somehow, Belafonte was Oscar-nominated for Best Original Song for this, even though he did not write it, and it had already been covered a few times by then.

Anyhow, his is not the original, but it is less a cover or less un- an original (if that makes sense), than the Righteous Brothers version.

"Brevity: soul of wit": here we go.
Trying to give a little taste of some recent musical acquisitions. Haven't even told you yet what I got in Portland, let alone given you a taste!
For Shame.

Okay, so Teddy Pendergrass again, a solo joint this time.
(Not HMBftTP)

Got this after Portland, in Philly, mais oui, at Molly's Outlet in South Philly- 1117. E. Passyunk Ave. You can still check out their special outlet sale this weekend. All records a buck, and a much sharper selection than a thrift store.

Haven't copied It's Time For Love yet to hard drive, because 1) trĆØs cray busy and 2) got a new laptop to replace my worn-out "CRAPtop" and haven't loaded the requisite software yet.
Busy for the normal reasons,....
plus...
I am plotting something big right now. I'm about to pull off a real coup, wait and see. A masterstroke, to cap all things good.

Literally Quite Shitty

My new place is shitty. Quite shitty. For instance, just seconds ago, the front door is open, as it sometimes is. There is of course snow on the ground right now, but sure, let’s get a little fresh air in here.

Dowload J Mascis, "If That's How It's Gotta Be" (ripped from vinyl, FYI)

The place is literally so shitty, that when we were unloading the moving truck,

There was feces in the toilet.

And there was no handle on the toilet.
There was, generously, a coat hanger attached to a string for flushing…
but the water was off.

That is sort of the low- highlight. But there’s more.
One day, someone let the air out of both my bike tires in the hallway.
The door is left open randomly, and is almost never locked until sometime after dark.
Actually, maybe it’s best that they let air out of my tires- since the door is wide open, flats would make my bike more difficult to walk away with!

There is a full size window in the shower. I have since painted over the window (to keep the children at the school across the street from learning too much); the previous solution, which was left for me to remove, was car window tinting.
I doth not jest! The car tinting had a wonderful dual nature: I could see out, and, right, we have to trust, still be unseen as I looked out on the neighborhood!
So the trashy local kids who drink and shout and cuss and spit and cough and yell and laugh (the demons) directly under this window, could perhaps be spied on while I take care of my hygienic needs.

Right after I moved in, someone left a couch (too big for the stairs) in the hallway.
For ten days.
Eventually, we all stopped being polite (like the Real World!) and shoeprints and bike tires began to leave their marks.

When I moved in, no cleaning or anything resembling cleaning had been done. Compounding this, I have a Chinese-style oven, which means two fans, high gas flames, and… covered with wok grease. The fans and hood had so much ‘ambient grease’ covering them, that there were little stalagtites of (somebody else’s!) fat hanging down. (still can’t remember difference between ‘tites and ‘mites)

On the food tip, it’s South Philly, so there are plenty of bugs. And the fridge, until I divined the Goldilocks temp, alternated between freezing my lettuce solid and melting my just-bought ice cream. It also runs all the time.
Ah yes, the fridge also is in front of one of two electric outlets in the entire house. None in bathroom (how am I to curl my hair?), one in bedroom, just one plug left in kitchen, so my sous-vide process must be done in the bedroom (not really).
But there are two cable outlets in the bedroom, so we have the essentials covered.

The cabinets were perhaps put in by a sadistic child with a learning disability, since one door opens into the side of another cabinet (i.e. opens 2 inches), and all of them have an inaccessible top shelf, unless you have a step ladder. They were not so kind as to supply a step ladder, although they did leave other furniture.

There also was no working smoke detector (took them a month to replace it), which became an even more pressing issue when my brand-new flouro bulbs kept burning out, just weeks after I put them in. I looked at the lighting (as if I’m some fucking electrician) and the copper wiring was so old, it was green.

There is a lot of great stuff about my neighborhood (not so much ‘a lot’ about my house though), and maybe I will share that with you all later. But right now, I feel like complaining, because I am like that wiring:
old and fussy and smoldering.

Which is why I played you J Mascis: he’s like that too.

A Colonoscopy For Chris - tmas?!?

I am pretty sure I have mentioned before: Lou Rawls is so good, he even makes Christmas music good. Great, really. It's like he's the King of Kings or something!!

Download Lou Rawls, "Little Drummer Boy"
If your heart is not putrid and upside-down and evil and filled with snuff, you should continue listening to all Rawls' Xmas goodness on YouTube . There is nary a cheeseball in there. Maybe a snowball or two...

...also, Operation SnowDump begins tomorrow! Ask Kyle, if you're intrigued: "Op S" is the secret title for all our big secret Portland plans...

Speaking of intrigued, when I began search-typing "Lou Rawls Christmas"
(because I mean it, his whole Christmas album is good, so I didn't know just which song I wanted to play)
well shucks, I got to the "C" of "Xmas", and what popped up?!?!

It's in English, as the clip title helpfully states, but let's remember:
Christmas is not just for Chris, nor just for English-speakers.
Christmas is for everybody.

Oh, by the way, I meant it when I put an enema on my Christmas list. Nuh Be Afeared: go ahead and buy me one. In fact, be really not scared:

Go for a BOGO!

Infamous Anniversary

Since today's is an anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, I am throwing this at you. Put it on blast-
Team America!; Team Isley!

Download Isley Brothers, "Ballad of the Fallen Soldier" here

I didn't say "blast" to be funny. It was an accident; yet, since it is a little bit funny, I will leave it.
Another happy accident: I googled 'peral harbor' first (to check if today was the day or not ... shameful not to know, isn't it?). What if it were called "Feral Harbor"?
Wouldn't that be wild?!?!

That's a feral pig, dummy.

Jay-Z sampled the Isley Brothers' "Ballad of the Fallen Soldier": the keyboard hook and some guitar...

And you know what? The hell with Jay-Z. That's right, I said it. Why is that fool rapping about marriage?
Just because he is married is not a good excuse!
I do not want to hear songs about marriage right now- that is why I am listening to the hip-hop radio station.
Only NPR stations give you less about marriage than hip-hop radio. Well, NPR talks all the time about GayMarriage (...liberals...) fair enough. But I thought I could count on rappers to uphold their fine tradition of pretending like love and ruinous heartbreak simply never happen.

What the fuck rap?!
You blew it.

"Happy" Music? Really Though?

The Blackbyrds' Happy Music

(Download Happy Music by The Blackbyrds at Mediafire)

The Internet doesn't have the full lyrics anywhere- so I will supply the missing lyrics which are relevant for our purposes:

" when you get up/and you gotta / start your day
feelin' lazy/and confused / you can find your way
Happy music/is the music / you need to play
if you want to/it will help you / save your day "

Good thing I am not writing my dissertation right now, because today, and the days that are like, have been and will be like, today, even preparing for class seems a chore.
Confused and Lazy.

Happy Music, sure, but also pretty dark for this band. Sort of the inverse of a point I've made before: The Stooges' "No Fun" is actually probably their most fun song.

For the Blackbyrds (most of their songs are fun, and light 'n' mellow),
this actually has a pretty dark edge.

Now, dark and happy are not strictly opposed- but neither do they have any necessary connection.
You could be both dark and happy at one moment, but that would be a bit of the old "cake and eat it too," wouldn't it?

So certainly these days (late-year, ... etc. ...) are dark, but ideally, they would be happy, for you, as well.

Bad Luck

I found $5 on the sidewalk the other day: good luck.
Other than that, I've had only Bad Luck these days (not to be self-indulgent). I mean, even the $5 had been sitting out in the rain. Got all wet.

{jump to 3:00 if you don't want to see Richard Pryor chat with them}

This Bad Luck started months ago. Of course, I know someone else who had the very same run of bad luck. Very sad and very true.
But I won't go on about it here- blogs aren't the place for showing your face.

"Blue Notes" indeed.

Anyhow: this is a good dance song about bad luck.
[as Teddy states: "Ain't it a groove!"]
Bad Luck as a danceable theme may seem strange- but then, think of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition." Stevie's song came out in 1972, and the above song (with Teddy Pendergrass and the rest of Harold Melvin's Blue Notes) came out in 1975.
Was Bad Luck in the air, in the Ʀther, those days,
as it seems to be today?

Tell the World I Feel Proud About 'Cha

To force a smile onto your face, a handful of reasons for minor celebration in Philadelphia this week:

1) You can now stream (at www.tsopsoulradio.com), all hours and all days, the famed "Sound of Philadelphia".

The Sound of Philadelphia (aka TSOP) is associated almost entirely with Gamble and Huff and their label Philadelphia International Records (aka PIR).

Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, "Tell the World How I Feel About 'Cha Baby"

Philadelphia International Records, of which I have spoken to you before, is proudly displaying their archives, like a musical peacock.

Some of this stuff, I imagine, is otherwise only available on vinyl or even 8-track.
I have already streamed it on my IPhone; it was easy. I had to download an app called Shoutcast, which lets you stream podcasts on a smartphone, more or less.

This is all part of a big push to re-release and promote the great catalog of Philadelphia International Records. This is a back catalog that rivals Motown, no question.
(Do you demand Proof? Scroll my PIR-related archives, or listen to the Shoutcast player embedded above.)

2) The scaffolding is off Philadelphia's city hall, finally. The word "finally" is called for, since this eyesore has been clouding my view of Philly's literal centerpiece for years. As soon as you thought it was down, you realized that it had merely rotated to another side! Scaffolding, of some form or another and on some side or another, has been up since the 80's.
Like the cleaning, the construction of the building dragged on for decades (more info here).
But now both are complete, so tip your hat to Penna and Phila.

3) The hurricane passed without much incident. Sort of a funny thing to note, that an absence, a non-entity, is worth celebrating. But that's how people think, isn't it? People compare purely imaginative "events" (what could have been [= what did not occur] ) and judge which would be really better.

Which of these "never happened" events is better?: if I would have had one samurai sword in 1997,

or two smaller blades in 1999?

Well, it's sort of stupid to even ask. And all such comparisons of purely fictitious entities are just as ridiculous.
You can't respond, "well, the hurricane really might have been worse,"
because in fact, the hurricane really (REAL-ly) Was Not.
There might be degrees of being, but there are not degrees of non-being; that is, there is no meaning in describing things that are not real, as "almost real." And it is yet more foolish to then judge the goodness of these non things, to pick one nothing as "more" something-good than another nothing.

Fire Dance With Me- Ohio Players

Well, as of noon, I am done with the semester.
In full. In toto. In-joying myself.

Margeaux will be done tonight too. Which requires that I present another helping of the mix I am preparing: Hello Jello!, the The Cosby Show-inspired mix I mentioned last time.

on YouTube - Ohio Players: Together, from their album FIRE.

Ayo! Si muy caliente, y fuego mas fina!
Please note the almost NSFW cover art. Scandalous.

I am not sure if I will put this very song on the mix yet, but certainly some Ohio Players song will go on there. The YouTube clip doesn't have to be the exact song yet, since I am just trying to let you know what type of sounds to expect.

The clips are just a taste,

just a teaser,

of what greatness and grandness is to come.

Maybe "Fire" will go on the mix, that is a big one; maybe "Ecstasy" would be better for this mix than "Together." "Ecstasy" got a li'l more bounce to it; but then, "Together" has those horns. Brass instruments will be big on this mix,
because it is going to be deeply funky.

4.26.2011

High On Jello

For a mix I'm putting together, inspired by The Cosby Show, called Hello Jello!

My lady friend Margeaux loves The Cosby Show, so I am making this mix for her. Still crafting it though: I will post songs that have the right sound here first, until I shove the full, fully finished mix on you.

And what is that "Right Sound?" It will be dentist-office funk: smooth (or even shmoove) jazzy things. Describable as slinky maybe. "Easy, not Cheesy." (that should be trademarked, yeah?)
The songs are having fun, without being outright silly. Loose-limbed, they will make a nice background as we shift into early summer.
Sade could go on there, although maybe she won't. Why?: because I want it to sound Cosby-era, so 70's and 80's gems.
( Although technically Sade's 1st US single came out at the end of 1984*, to me, Sade feels like 90's music. And although technically Cosby show started just a few months before that**, since I don't remember watching it much [although I did watch it plenty- when I watch it now, I can recall the plots as they are unfolding], it feels 70's-80's to me. )

* had to look it up
** also had to look that up, believe it

Enough about the mix; how about the song and band?

The Commodores do "Brick House": you know that song. It would totally play at a wonderful summer wedding reception:

The Commodores also had Lionel Richie in their band for a minute. Weirdly, after he left, they got more mellow. Once he was gone, they started to sound, well, like Lionel Richie. Before that, they were this hard-driving 'fonk' machine.

De La Soul sampled this song, on the Stakes Is High album. That is a feloniously undervalued record, like all of their records (except for 3 Feet High... And Rising: that gets about the right amount of praise).

( First De La album I ever bought- a little late to these fellows... 2000? also, I have it on vinyl, AND, after the above Commodores song, De La Soul came next on my iTunes random. F'serious! )

What I was initially leaning toward putting on Margeaux's mix was the Commodores song, "Girl, I Think the World About You" (obv), which I will:
1) maybe still put on the mix
and
2) maybe put up on to Youtube, where it cannot yet be found. Can it really be all that tough to post to YouTube?

De La also sampled"Girl, I...", for "Hey Buddy;" so you can see where their heads are at, right?
Tricky sampled The Commodores too!: info for the samples got drawn from this detailed site, Sample Spotters. 19 songs- nineteen- are listed for sampling (just the drums) from a single Commodores track.
Wow.

Together Soon: Teddy & Sharon ( & Harold ?! )

This one's a duet.
From the random selection on my IPhone which I brought to Portland- and will shortly bring to Houston.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes: Hope That We Can Be Together Soon
AKA "Teddy Pendergrass Feat. Sharon Paige: "Hope That...."
Teddy and Harold had a little spat, see- Harold founded the group, but by the time they were successful, well see, Teddy was doing all the lead singing.
(And How!)
Teddy wanted his name added to the existing group-name, which would have produced the titular monstrosity of
"Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes Featuring Teddy Pendergrass".

"No dice", says Harold; Teddy says "I quit".
But not before recording this song with Sharon Paige (and the rest of the Blue Notes); she too was a Blue Note at the time, so this track really only needs the title "HM & BN: 'HWCBTS'",
not "TP FT SP (AKA HM & BN FT TP & FT SP): 'HTWCBTS'".

Clarifying, I'm sure.
I think we all learned a lot today.

I Like to Boogie; I Like the Bee Gees

Another song off my IPod: Jive Talkin', by Los Bee Gees.
Oh sure, you want to knock the Bee Gees. Yeah yeah, you think you are too slick for all that. "Pfff", is what you say.
Well, I say, "Pffffff" back to you, sucker. Listen here:

Welcome Back

I am now back in Portland, and listening to my IPhone's mp3s. A very loose collection of stuff made it onto my phone's IPod.
I'll post up those songs which I think you all could make friends with: post them as I hear them, more or less.

Here is one such tune, and very appropriate to start off with:

Evidently, this is the theme song to "Welcome Back Kotter", which I have never really seen. Which means that, while you can get multiple videos of "theme song" length -- including one with footage from Grand Theft Auto!? and another from Final Fantasy VII!?! -- I could not find any longer* version.
(Note that the above video does not even mention the name of the artist who sang it!: John Sebastian. I'd be insulted- but then, he's prob dead.)

S'okay- all I really needed, which is included in both short videos, are the lines:

"Well, we tease him a lot/
'cos we got him on the spot;
Welcome Back."

* ! Newsflash! This Just In!
My Mom has just cracked an egg of knowledge all over the place: back in the 70's, some theme songs were written special for the show. "Kotter" is such a theme. So, the original version is the above short version! And what I have on my IPod is a later version, which they lengthened some, to 2:40-ish. So while the above videos for John Sebastian's "Welcome Back" are odd -- deeply odd -- they do in fact give you the original version.

(I prefer the extra minute, tbf ['to be frank'].)

Purify Your Puppet

James and Bobby Purify: "I'm Your Puppet"
on YouTube

G'wan, download it, if you please. A nice old version from my record collection.

Another YouTube version from a TV show, circa 1966
(more fun to watch, but, sadly, I cannot embed it directly)

I love this song. In all honesty, I never knew I could love like this.
(I don't care if they are brothers)- I am going to marry it, I love it so much.
