Halloween- HalloNew Order Edition

Download "SkullCrusher" (BOO!) by New Order

New Order created the theme to a movie, called Salvation! (the exclamation mark is not mine), and the songs are all real gems.
The movie, is "maybe not" a real gem.
(although it does have Viggo and Exene Cervenka in it... wait, now I am thinking "maybe so" )
It seems to involve blackmailing a sham preacher... pretty Halloweenesque.

"Sputnik" is airy, atmospheric, like fog drifting around a car, coasting through a deserted back stretch of highway... with no driver!!! (scary)

It's movie music, you know, so most of these songs have zero words. Only "Touched by the Hand of God" has any.
"Sputnik" is the most clearly from a movie- it's 'filmic';
the other ones are that subset of New Order style which reminds you forcefully of Joy Division.

"Skullcrusher" is the one that sounds the very most like Joy Division; "Let's Go" is a close second.
Now, I like New Order when they don't sound like Joy Division, absolutely (we all do, right?!?! ),
but when developing a Halloween theme, by God, it had better sound like Joy Division.

Infamous Anniversary

Since today's is an anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, I am throwing this at you. Put it on blast-
Team America!; Team Isley!

Download Isley Brothers, "Ballad of the Fallen Soldier" here

I didn't say "blast" to be funny. It was an accident; yet, since it is a little bit funny, I will leave it.
Another happy accident: I googled 'peral harbor' first (to check if today was the day or not ... shameful not to know, isn't it?). What if it were called "Feral Harbor"?
Wouldn't that be wild?!?!

That's a feral pig, dummy.

Jay-Z sampled the Isley Brothers' "Ballad of the Fallen Soldier": the keyboard hook and some guitar...

And you know what? The hell with Jay-Z. That's right, I said it. Why is that fool rapping about marriage?
Just because he is married is not a good excuse!
I do not want to hear songs about marriage right now- that is why I am listening to the hip-hop radio station.
Only NPR stations give you less about marriage than hip-hop radio. Well, NPR talks all the time about GayMarriage (...liberals...) fair enough. But I thought I could count on rappers to uphold their fine tradition of pretending like love and ruinous heartbreak simply never happen.

What the fuck rap?!
You blew it.

Teddy Pendergrass- To Know Him, is to Love Him

Teddy Pendergrass on Youtube; specifically, Teddy with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes: "Be Real"

We lost one. Teddy Pendergrass passed yesterday. Rest In Power, Teddy P.
I heard about it on NPR, that trusted source for black entertainment news.

The track above is right thick in the middle of my last (official...) AMX Mix. This one apes the sound of the sounds on the Pulp Fiction sdtk (=soundtrack).
It is called Black Mask McGuffin (I'll explain, next post). Grab it here.
So it is some grownup, sexy, calm before the (quiet) storm business. You know that the Reverend Al Green is on there: just extrapolate, and you have half the mix.

You might know Teddy from R Kelly's "I'm A Flirt", where T Pain references him.
(to know him, is to love him)
T Pain calls himself "Teddy Bend-her-ass", which is vulgar, yes, but shows that Teddy P is known for being zexee.

You might also know Teddy (again, with his earlier group, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, hereafter HMBN) from the "Dead Presidents" soundtrack.
(to know him, is to love him)

Groups on the stellar Dead Prez sdtk include
Sly & The Family Stone, "Walk On By" (best version ever) by Isaac Hayes, HMBN, James Brown, Barry White, Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin , Al Green , The O'Jays , Isaac Hayes , and weirdly, Danny Elfman on the score.

Heavy hitters to a one, am I wrong? And HMBN and Teddy hit just as hard as any of the rest.
(the heavy hitters on "AMX: Black Mask McGuffin" include Al Green, Jerry Butler, James Brown, and HMBN too; but I wasn't copying, swear!)
My buddy/pal/confidant Kyle burnt me this sdtk, a looooong while ago. This sdtk used to be about one of two CDs of soul/RnB that I owned, along with Al Green's great Greatest Hits.
(got a few more now)
The CD is so old that it clips in and out near the end. It doesn't skip- it is not scratched- but rather, the CD is reflecting less light than it needs to, so there is a rhythmic clicking/scuffing near the end of the CD. It makes it sound like a scratched record, but not good like that.
Supposedly, all burnt CDs will do this eventually.
(Armand Van Helden burnt CD- also about 10 years old- suffered the same fate.....)
When they all go kaput, it will basically be like the fucking Apocalypse.

Also, let's have an adult moment, since this is some adult music here.
I'll be honest with you: some of these tracks, some not all, are a bit on the scratchy side.
It stands as indirect proof of the greatness of these particular records. These records were so well-loved (by previous owners) that they got played again and again,
and again,
and eventually picked up a li'l scuff here and there.
But you can handle it, right, you can hang tough? I hope so. Even if you cannot, you will only notice the scuff on the tracks right in the beginning; once those strings/basslines/harmonies/etc drop, there will be enough volume to cover li'l scuff. So nuh be afeared, man.

Even if you don't like the sound of the vinyl, it could be worse.

You could be dead.

The Essential (F'ing) Davidson! - KAPOW

Kimmie (AKA DKB) made me look this up many weeks ago.

Pretty good, right?
Because he is wearing a tuxedo, and it is night, and he is not crying, it reminds me of this song:

Download: Tuxedomoon- No Tears

(b/c its chorus says "No Tears for the Creatures of the Night: No Tears!")

I got this song on a mix CD that AKA Music put out years ago.
(Just last night, a secret meeting of philosophers convened at Oscar's, and we decided that this was, for all of us, the only record store in Philadelphia that we really liked.)

Most of the band's songs don't sound like this, I'm told. This is antsy-dancey post-punk. A really fast keyboard line cranks out of it; mucho post-macho guitars. So, while it is a tough little number, you don't have to be, or even want to be, a tuff-guy to appreciate it.

It would sound great on the soundtrack to a remake of Fritz Lang's M, about which I just watched a videoblurb on NYTimes.com.
M is one of my favorite movies ever; I am bad at putting together lists of things (top, worst, year-end) but I can always remember that this movie would go on the list.

But here comes a list: things I bought/got for Xmas.
(CHRIStmas is not my birthday; don't worry, you are not the only one who gets confused about this.)
I'm only going to list media: you are hopefully none too concerned with the colors, brands, and number of socks that I received
(black and browns; Gold-Toe and Dockers; five thousand-ish, FYI)
because I asked for precisely such sundry necessaries.

[Partial list: more to come...]

Books

The Essential Davidson (!!!!!!!!!!!) by Donald(oh...) Davidson
(Famous!)
Man of Reason by Genevieve Lloyd
(Feminist!)
A Collected Marquise de Sade
(Fisting!)
The Big Bento Box of Unuseless Japanese Inventions by Kenji Kawakami
(Funny!)
Therapy of Desire by Martha Nussbaum
(Fundamentals on Freedom From disturbance!)
Origins of Greek Thought by Pierre Vernant
(Foucault's Friend!)
The Odd One in: On Comedy by Alenka Zupančič
(Freedom = Funny!)
Introduction to Kant's Anthropology (Semiotext(e) Foreign Agents) by Michel Foucault
(Foucault!)

Next List: CDs/records that I scored...

Serious Serial Vol. 2: Titular

OH PART TWO!!!
As I just posted, new things happened (which is, of course, the same old story: new things Just Keeping Happening).
I got some new-old books, all with great titles (hopefully, they read well too):
Middlemarch, by Georg Eliot. (Georg is a GIRL!, by the way.)

Diary of a Madman, and other stories: Gogol. This is the actual cover of the book that I bought: used, very, I'm sure you can see.

N. Gogol is well-known for his novel, Dead Souls, ahem:

An Even Better song, everyone's new favorite Joy Division song, is below. Be a deary and listen to both, why don't you? You ask: why put both then? I reply: because the theme of today's blog revolves around TITLES- that is what 'titular' means, you little dirty- and so I was compelled to post the song enTITLEd "Dead Souls". You recognize the decisive and deciding logic now, I'm sure.

More Books. Thomas Mann's Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man.

Flounder, by Günter Grass. The Flounder of the title is a character:

a talking fish.

I started watching movies again. Recents: Jesse James meets Frankenstein's Daughter, and Hour of the Wolf (another great title); this movie is a little more serious than the other. It is directed by Ingmar Bergman, and deals with
Love,
Art,

and Madness.

Oh, how very Euro.

Both were worth watching. Well, JJ VS FD is worth it, if you are me (you aren't) and were sick (you might have been). Don't tell me if you were- I don't want to hear about it. I get enough detailed descriptions of my students' illnesses, thx.

Billy Bragg, and Steven Wells: A New England, A New Day, A New Way?

A local journalist died recently, and was lovingly yakked about in the local press. He was Steven Wells, and we wrote loud, short-but-they-feel-longer pieces, about music and general goings-on (like knitting, and how much he despised it).

Sounds like my blog, correct?: but he was, admittedly, better. In part, because he was British, so when he swore (often), it was with words like "SLAG!".

Accident Waiting To Happen - Billy Bragg

[[[ I'm putting a YouTube clip below, because you can maybe only listen to 30 seconds of the above, correct? If you don't have an Imeem.com account at least, correct? Be Honest: has anyone actually got one? (...comments plz...)I do, obv, but do you guys? Or are you all just hearing mini-tiny-itty-bitty clipz? ]]]

So, this qualifies the 'local' aspect, but he'd been here a while and made a life for himself. In fact, he must have deliberately chosen Philly, because he used to be mad famous in England, writing for NME and such. One day he picked up and came here, quite making his mark.
Anyhow, he was famous enough (and impassioned enough, and liked enough) that Billy Bragg wrote about him upon his death.
Now I love Billy Bragg; when I still had a list under the MUSIC section on my Myspace page, he was on there. You understand the relative significance of this, yeah?

(Above is the YouTube version to listen to -IF- you've never heard the song before; if you've heard it a bit, listen to the one at the bottom. It better shows his camaraderie with his audience [funny, because he's a Socialist, get it, Comrade?], his folk and punk roots when he makes them singalong, and how he's funny/charming. These would all be reasons why he and Steven Wells were on friendly terms...)

I won't launch into a grand description of him here, for these reasons:
1) Dude's pretty big- and you are a big girl/boy- so you can figure it out on your own
2) I may write more about him later, maybe vis a vis my "Slept On" series, where I discuss 'really-favorite' music that I never hear my friends talk about

Dig?

Here are some lyrics from that song:

"I was twenty one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty two now, but I won't be for long
People ask when will you grow up to be a man
But all the girls I loved at school are already pushing prams

I loved you then as I love you still
Tho I put you on a pedestal
They put you on the pill...

I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl

I loved the words you wrote to me
But that was bloody yesterday
I can't survive on what you send
Every time you need a friend

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care"

heh

I Made it Good to Myself (but Michael Jackson did not, b/c he's dead)

Got back from Portland, where the weather was about as good as it has been lately in Philadelphia. Surprisingly, I only got two (2) (!) CDs while I was there. I meant to go by Everyday Music, still my favorite ever CD shop, but didn't really have time. (Didn't get to Prineville's Neat Repeat either).
That's okay, for two reasons- 1) saved $40-80; 2) I can go in a few weeks if I go back for the Beer Festival: odds are about even on that.

Make It Good To Yourself - James Brown

BREAKING NEWS: James Butler has reported that E! has reported that Michael Jackson is reportedly dead! Reports are reporting that it was cardiac arrest (aka a BROKEN HEART!).
(not to be selfish, but does this mean that I can finally claim the title of King of Pop?!?!? ALL HAIL the NEW King of Pop!!! Three Cheers for meMeME!!! YEA ME!!!)
Related reports report that Farrah Fawcett also finally succumbed to her long bout of cancer... ANAL cancer!
NJK! Look it up!

(related connection: a famous beer expert is also named Michael Jackson, and is also dead. It's a F A C T ! Also, James Brown is dead- sad but true!)

Got them (them: James Brown "Black Caesar" sdtk.; Jesus & Mary Chain hits/best) at some resale shop near Alberta, or near Mississippi (ask Emily which it was).

You know that James Brown is called "the Godfather of Soul", of course. What you DID NOT KNOW is that he gave himself this nickname via the score/soundtrack he did for "Black Caesar". "Whuh?", you say. Cos' "The Godfather" came out around the same time, and since both movies deal with godfathers/Caesars/gangsters, he piggybacked on the other, already successful, movie. So sayeth the liner notes. IT BE FACTUAL!

While I was there, these things happened:
I almost hit a bear with my parents' car. On a mountain, obviously: my parents don't live (quite) that far out.
Talked firearms etc. with Jeffrey et al ("reasonable people", the lot of them).
I mass-texted a rape joke. It met with laughter (text laughter) (in most cases).
I got a flat on another person's bike. (For consistency's sake, yet retaining a certain air of variety via a clever inversion, I got two flats when I returned, on my own bike while going to a house which is not my own.)
I received a subpoena* for James Brown.**

it says: 'my heart tells me that you will not listen to my words and this is the cause of my tears and my cries'. This sums up my blog.

*subpoena, like Caesar, is hard for me to spell. I'll never get to be the new King of Latinists if I can't get them right!
**this DID IN FACT HAPPEN, although when I lived in Portland before. One of the children who mugged Adriel when I was with her was, evidently, named James Brown. "Godfather of Soulful Muggings"? "Hardest Working Boy in tha Game"? Maybe even "New King of Robbery"?

Sidenote: I am listening to some of the mixes posted earlier on this blog, and man, THEY ARE GOOD! Find the list of blogs with full mixes HERE.

Philadelphia From Salem - Romulus and Remus

I'm trying an experiment:
I'm writing two blogs simultaneously, so that you will have shorter posts, and more of them. We'll see if this works.
They are opposed twins, so we'll call them Romulus and Remus.

One is posted today, the other soon after.

I first was going to have one of my oft-postponed "X-Battles", where I pit two songs in band-to-band combat. This battle then morphed into these twinned posts; which then morphed into a different X-Battle.
There are a series of battles running here:
Oregon X Pennsylvania; (both posts)
Rain X Sun; (next post)
New band X Old band (aka blogbuzz vs reissues); (next)
New band doing a Cover X the Original; (this post)
Scuzz production X Cleanroom production (both).

Now, we will have drugged drugged drugged band SALEM trying to outdo the BOSS himself (who is probably really sober) .

Brustreet - SALEM

Above is Salem covering Bruce Springsteen's great "Streets of Philadelphia". Salem has an EP called "Yes I Smoke Crack". Here is a picture of an historic building in Salem, Oregon, with a crack in it:

This band Salem is probably named after Witch-Trials Salem, but Salem is also the meth-addled capital of Oregon. (I'm more concerned with getting things stolen in OR than PA: meth = stealing, and meth is not much of a drug out here in PA, because meth also = country.)
Salem the band sound like (recently legalized) Absinthe mixed with Oxycontin instead of sugar; like cough syrup mixed with boxed wine; like My Bloody Valentine mixed with the Knife and with strains of chopped and screwed Southern/Midwestern hip-hop : CHOP the pill; and unSCREW the wine.
Oregon is the only state with a two-sided flag. The flag, other than that, is very boring, and why are the letters all crooked??.

Salem is the capital of Oregon- and you ask, "Why not Portland, which I've actually heard of? Or at least Eugene, which has a big ol' university in it?"
Almost all state capitals are the not-biggest city, and this is done on purpose: it is to counteract the very real and very natural power (economic, cultural, geographical) that cities possess more of than do rural areas. This discrepancy occurs even when the cities hold significantly less people in them than the countryside.

(In Oregon, it is a rough balance, #-wise, between quasi-libertarian rightists and "Little Beirut" leftists: left lives in cities, and so has the upper-hand. IT'S A FACT!!)

Placing the capital outside of the largest city helps to strike a balance of the "naturally opposed humours"; the haves and the haves-less.
I steal this idea from Machiavelli. It occurs in both "On Principalities", his most-famous text (aka "Da Prince"), and his "Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livius" and is key to uniting his championing of both quasi-tyrannical power and quasi-democratic republicanism.

--this is Prince on a high-school b-ball team:

Ahem! But, see, Rome's battles, with external enemies and with itself (have X have-less; city X country; Citizen X slaves), are appropriate here:
Rome itself was a productive clash of discipline (the Boss- how long has he been around? about as long as Rome itself: this requires discipline),
and the insanity of a dark violent youth: what do you think propelled and compelled them to take their many older neighbors as enemies, again and again? What do you think pushed citizen against citizen, time and again? (It wasn't drug disputes.)
What do you think drove Rome, with little rhyme or reason (but with plenty of instrumental rationality), to move from ruling nothing, to ruling 7 hills, to ruling from England to Africa to India?.
So Rome itself must be understood as a clash between Salem and Bruce Springsteen- this much has obviously been established- and the question is, who gets the greater share of the legacy?

Streets Of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen

Who won the battle? I expect you to argue, to battle this out in the comments section.

Futurist Revelations - the Second (secular) Coming - Be Thankful!

Yeeeeuh... another mix, matched so mean! This one is the originally planned mix for The Second (Secular) Coming: this one deals not with my colossal narcissism, but rather with the purity of spirit which is my Divinity Proper.
HELL YES!

Link it up : The Second (Secular) Coming.zip

As a mix, it moves from slow-burning but intense/driven (1-3), to sprawling dirty grandeur (4-5), quietism without passivity (6-8), a darkness (9-11) pefiguring The End and Resurrection (12-13). Quite a history here...

Here is the cast of characters, in the order in which you ought to listen to them:
1 Eternity Is Here *The Gun Club* Danse Kalinda Boom
2 Coded Language *Krust (Featuring Saul Williams)* Coded Language
3 The Prophet *The Make-Up* Untouchable Sound—Live
4 Revelations *Panthers* The Trick
5 Dead Souls *Joy Division* Permanent
6 My Body Is A Cage *The Arcade Fire* Neon Bible
7 City Of Refuge [Acoustic Version] *Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds* B-Sides And Rarities Volume I
8 Be Thankful For What You've Got (orignially by Devaughn - live cover) *Yo La Tengo*
9 Death To Everyone *Bonnie "Prince" Billy* I See A Darkness
10 Share the Fall *Roni Size and Reprazent (Grooverider's RMX)*
11 I Swear *Tulipomania*
12 Back *Alpha* Come From Heaven
13 I Am The Resurrection *The Stone Roses* The Complete Stone Roses

DOWNLOAD : The Second (Secular) Coming.zip

Share the Fall- sparse and epic. Like Fitzgerald, as 'read to me' (i.e. quoted) by Deleuze:
"twilight on a deserted range, with an empty rifle in my hands and the targets down. No problem set — simply a silence with only the sound of my own breathing." The sound of a faraway, lifeless planet: it bakes during the day and it freezes at night.

Body is a Cage: Church organs, giving the grand sweep, the operatic heights, appropriate to the Declaration of Divinity.

Eternity is Here: Once started, this song begins to instantly, insistently proclaim itself. Whipcrack drums, plaintive guitars. Its insistence is almost a prosyletizing.

Death to Everyone: see the cover for a picture of the aforementioned planet.

Lyrically, this songs does this:
"Stars turn, balls burn / Coming kids are raging

Death to everyone is gonna come / And it makes hosing much more fun"

"So strap me on and raise me high / Cause buddy I'm not afraid to die
But life is long and it's tremendous / And we're glad that you're here with us".

Dead Souls- Joy Division made this song, which later was covered by NIN (on "The Crow" Soundtrack). You know what this one sounds like. It sounds like JoyDiv, so how could it not go on a mix about the Second (secular) Coming?:
Ian Curtis died by his own hand (as did Jesus- well, His Dad asked Him to die, and He consented - since He is, in a mysterious but essential fashion, His own father. He consented to His own death: that is, He is a suicide),
and the Crow character COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD to avenge wrongs done him. And what is Divine Justice if not supernaturally aided punishment of the wicked?

DOWNLOAD : The Second (Secular) Coming.zip

Back- Alpha is always slept on: I told you this already. Some fantastic male crooning here; you'd do well to check it out if you like Rufus Wainwright, or the more sedate Morrissey even. This song has a hazy quality: incense floating through a still afternoon.
But In A Barn.
A barn with a record player. And records (for sampling): old ones, very scratchy and mellowed with age.

I = Resurrection- Manchester Madchester : Woodblock like the cowbell in a Will Ferrel SNL skit. "I put my raver-sized corduroy pants on the same way you do, mate: except when I put on my pants, I make GOLD RECORDS!" (cue laugh track)
(please?).

Coded Language - Man, when this one breaks, it B R E A K S out for real. Massive world consuming clattering drums. Some lyrics (By the great poet Saul Williams):
"Motherfuckers better realize, now is the time to self-actualize.
We have found evidence that hip hop's standard 85 rpm, when increased by a number of at least half the rate of it's standard, or decreased at a third of its speed, may be a determining factor in heightening consciousness.
[somehow, he is actually rapping all these words -
- believe, brudda, It Works]
Thus, in the name of:
Robeson, God's son, Hurston, Ahkenaton, Khalo, Kali, Whitman, Baldwin, Ghandi, Gibran, Shabazz, Hamer, Holiday, Davis, Coltrane, Morrison, Joplin, Gaye, Hathoway, Nostradamus, Nefertiti, Shiva, Ganesha, Yemaja, Kennedy, King, four little girls, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Marley, Cosby, Shakur, Those Still Aflamed, and the countless unnamed!"

By this point of the song, trust me, we are all aflamed. Lit up by millenia of song and millenia of thought, all compressed into (the Coded Language of) quantized drums. INTENSE.

DOWNLOAD : The Second (Secular) Coming.zip

Be Thankful- a mellow little interpretation of the ol' soul-ish/reggae-ish classic. Be Thankful that I put this on there. (You might even snap your fingers during it!) Yo La Tengo is supremely good at covers- get into it and see what I mean...

Revelations- Panthers started out super-Futurist, very much in the vain of !Nation of Ulysses!. The Kids wanted their revolution, by gum, and they were going to knock on the squares until they got one. Now, Panthers seems more gripped by the ennui of being a hipster who knows that he's a hipster, and who also knows what this means: they have become nearly paralyzed by awareness of self-awareness. But the music hasn't frozen - oh no - they have moved away from any formulaic punk and added that rad heavy stoner drone psych grind that the Kids these day like so well: more Black Sabbath and less !Nation!. It's a good mix- heavy, but still with momentum/propulsion.

DEATH TO ALL KINGS
LONG LIVE THE PRINCE OF PRINCES

Older Gents - In Suits - With Tasteful Arrangments

Time to go see some shows. Shows that will be well-populated by older gents.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds tomorrow.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Opium Tea.mp3, from their "Rarities and B-Sides" compilation.

When I saw them in Portland, it was all German men in suits. Plus me, alone, because I have BETTER MUSICAL TASTE than all my friends (oh, except you!, don't be naff! I'm not talking about you at all!) I wonder what sorts will come out for it this time, in Philly rather than Portland (I know that Liam and Greg and Alex will be there- I mean what Other sorts?).

I just mentioned Kid Congo Powers to you in my post about his former band, the Gun Club; he is opening for N.Cave and B.Seeds this Tuesday at the Electric Factory. (He used to be in the Bad Seeds, too). Here he is, as a picture - He is the one with the gun over his heart.

I should have a nickname like his. "Kid Christophresh Physis"?

Perhaps not (at least I didn't haz teh epic fail).

OH! As I am writing this, I just saw a man in A SUIT, AND a woman with DYED BLACK HAIR! It's like I'm at the show already!

Also, related to this show, I recently bought the new Tindersticks album. It's good. However, it's a bit quiet; too quiet for me to prove to you, decisively, that they are a band for whom you must demonstrate devotion.
Here is a stream of a song from another album:

Tindersticks are great, and this song has some of their key elements: strings (which produce dramatics), Stuart Staples' warbly voice, hotel rooms (hourly, perhaps- I think Tindersticks' library must include a fair bit of Bataille- this song has "when the cab ride seems to long, we go have sex in the bathroom" going for it [lyrically, I mean]), ricocheting drums to keep you uneasy, drinking, arguments (not exclusive of drinking), and a whole world of destructive desires and fantasy ("I could've drowned in all those so-called dreams", Stuart informs), mournful horns, usw.
("usw." is German- it means "und so weiter", which fairly literally means 'and so forth' but is translated well by "etc.", which itself is Latin.)

Download another fantastic song by Tindersticks here; it's called "Can We Start Again". Many of their songs sound like 'starting again':
within an old love;
with a new love;
in a new place;
fresh out of rehab, usw.

Or, instead of downloading, you can listen at this object:

I'm also going to see TV On The Radio on Friday. I'm going because it's free; they are a fine band, but I never felt like listening to their first album.
So I sold it. But I didn't get much money for it, because it was one of those heavily-promoted records that is sold much cheaper for the first few months. It was something like $8.99, $9.99 new. No, really. So when I sold it, people already had it.
Oh, and you thought I would never come back to it, but here is the icing for those patient souls who get ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM:

there will be lots of old men at this show too, because this is a nerdy,
much blogged about and beloved band (a much be-blogged band),
because they are slightly obnoxious,
different in terms of makeup (there are black men in the band, which is rare in indie),
and, actually pretty interesting....
so older music critics (and the older men who want to be music critics- you know, like, actual journalists, with 'end of the year top tens' and bios and all that) love love LOVE them.

You know, like this guy (don't ask...)

Mystery at the Gun Club

I know that you have all been slavering at the mouth, waiting for my next blog. It would have come sooner, but I have been busy. Busy traveling, and reading, and buying more music.

Download The Gun Club's 'Come Back Jim' on Mediafire

or, maybe Download The Gun Club's 'The Fire of Love'

I was recently chided for ‘still’ buying music, but I don’t mind.
Because I know I’m right; I'm in the black and all that. (See below for an apologia of music purchasing- it's not what you expect...)
Thinking that it is goofball to buy music is simply false; in fact, I might go so far to say it's a LIE!!

Download The Gun Club's 'The Lie' on Mediafire
Or watch it !LIVE! on Youtube:

Plus, what would I spend my money on instead? I am running out of room for thriftstore kicks. I have already constructed a Foucaultian counter-archive (that means ‘lots of odd books’ about prisons, sexuality, state institutions, ‘abnormal’ individuals, militaries, and history history history). You know that I would just spend the $16.25 (no sales tax) on stickers from the dollar store (or worse, dollar store hardware/tools), caviar from Asian Invasion, SEPTA tokens, ceramic knickknacks or bric-a-brac, etc.
(just reflect for a moment upon how good this last part of this last sentence sounds and looks: “Caviar from Asian Invasion” [‘a’ and ‘i’ make such a good vowel-team!], and just say “Ceramic knickknacks and bric-a-brac” out loud. “My, what a Pleasant Blog!”)
I don’t need that junk.
Oh, what $16.25? I got *3* CDs in Portland for that paltry sum. All by one of my new favorite groups: GUN CLUB .

Right?!?!?

Big dramatic sweep. Wild-eyes and Snake-eyes. Very American: Blues, Country, Skuzzy, 'end-of-the-road' Guitars. My understanding is that Gun Club sort of helped spawn rockabilly (while not being rockabilly themselves), and the lead singer, Jeffery Lee Pierce (he’s one of those who writes almost all of the songs too) died young: drugs, prolly.
Listen to the way he sings, and tell me it’s not drugs that killed him. Look at him, and tell me if he doesn’t look like Brando crossed with Gerard Way.

Kid Congo Powers is in the band too, of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds fame, and also The Cramps.

A surprising amount of the Gun Club that I have is live; two full albums, and half of two more. Related to his death, and to label-related issues and troubles (some of their stuff is released on “Sympathy for the Record Industry”, as in, sympathy for the Devil). More interestingly, however, it’s probably related to how good they were live. A singer that sounds like he IS drugs, actually high, in front of you, live?: gots to be good, right?

Here’s the liner notes- in their entirety- from “Danse Kalinda Boom”:
”Yes its true kids, this is an authentic “live” album for the first time. In response to the overwhelming amount of illegal & incorrect recordings purporting to be “live” Gun Club albums, Kid Congo, Patricia Morrison & myself have found it necessary to release an “Authorized” live album representing the Gun Club experience at its best and as it truly went down. So guaranteed this is not an album of poor quality tapes licensed clandestinely to some dodgy label by disgruntled & frustrated ex-members. I can promise this record features the Gun Club at its “live” best and definitive line up. Rest in Peace. [signed] Jeffery Lee Pierce”

Funny- signed “Rest In Peace” to us ( but he dies); “disgruntled ex-members”; “how it truly went down”; “dodgy labels”. Plus, did he misspell his own name? Or did someone else write the whole thing- seriously undermining all the rhetoric of “authentic”- since the CD’s copyright date is 7 years after he died? A Real Jeffrey Lee M Y S T E R Y.

As promised, here is the apologia of buying music 'in this day and age':
First, if you just download it all, you are guided only by what you already know you like, or what someone else ‘knows’ to be ‘good’.
(On the other hand, presented with a random assortment of used CD’s or vinyl, you can find new stuff, get reminded of old stuff, and with CDs at least, give a little listen before a wholesale acquisition an entire downloaded back catalog, which, it may turn out, you don’t really like that much anyhow.)

Second, used music isn’t even really random, is it? It's better than random. Because someone had to like that CD enough to purchase it, so you actually have a built-in regulator of quality, although it’s far from failsafe: Cf. “ ‘knows’ to be ‘good’ ”. Whereas with mp3s, all that can be shown in someone else having it is that they probably have 'heard about it', and have the internet. Not a stellar recommendation, is it?}

Mo' Mixy - Hip-Hop Summer Edition

This mix is another commissioned piece: I was supposed to put together some rap cos I'm street like for days. It's known that I can be trusted with some serious hip-hop business: "serious as cancer", if you believe Eric B & Rakim (not that Eric B- he's never to be trusted).

Here is the ZIP with all the tracks in it; see below for some of the tracks as solo mp3s.
It Was A Birth Day / Pretty Rave Girls

Lady Don't Tek No * Latyrx
It Was A Good Day * Ice Cube
Hip Hop Hooray (Extended Mix) * Naughty By Nature
Oooh (Feat. Redman) * De La Soul
GlockNines * Jigga and Beanie Sigel
Knight Rider Duo * Busta Rhymes Vz Timberland
I Ain't No Joke * Eric B & Rakim
Juicy * Notorious B.I.G.
I'm A Flirt * R. Kelly f. T.I. & T.Pain
Phreek The Beet * Beans
Hey Mami * FannyPack
Elephant Message * Elephant Man
Pretty Rave Girl * Princess (of Crime Mob)

This one is good for when people are still showing up to the birthday party. Some hip-hop to put a smile on your face. Some of these tracks are well-known, too, so you can play them before people are well-settled into dancing or heavy conversations. "Flirt?": You Know It. Ice Cube?: He's Your Boy from back in the day (highschool). No-No-Notorious? Yeah, he's notorious , he's big.

Conrad and I have rapped like half the lines from the Biggie song together. WE DON'T SAY THE N-WORD tho ALL RIGHT? Oddly, when I try to rap my favorite line from this, I end up lisping, but the thing is, when B.I.G. raps, he lisps, but when I lithsp it out, it soundth real off. AW NUTZH!
'Birthdays was the worst days, now we sip champagne when we thirsty'.

I like how Kells will still have jokes about being a pervert on his tracks, even though he is currently in court for charges of being a pervert. Here, T.I. says he's going to peek up your girlfriend's skirt.
That reminds me- on my Flickr account, i named this picture 'upskirt', because, funny enough ("funny funny" not "funny ha ha"), that's what it looks like dudes trying to do. Immediately it got over 70 hits! Because other dudes (well, probably that guy too) search Flickr for that types a stuff. Still, easy, my most-viewed picture...

Now some of the solo tracks, although, honestly, you should download the whole mix. I laid just the right tracks down, and they are meticuously ordered, and so on and so forth. SO grab the whole ZIP if you know what's good fer ya.

Beans, who used to be part of Anti-Pop Consortium, bringing those rhymes that are so "magnanimous, magnificent, spit meticulous: so nice, these beats help old ladies cross the street"
Beans - Phreek the Beat

All the clerks wanna offer you help, old folks compliment your style/
Little children wanna jump in your lap, girl I wanna do that myself
That's a lil' charmer coming from Lyrics Born of Latyrx:
Latyrx - Lady Don't Tek No

Redman drops in De La Soul's Studio some summer, and we get this party number:
De La Soul - Oooh (Feat. Redman)

Yet more summertime business, but this time we on the stoop, hollerin' at some young things.
FannyPack - Hey Mami

Odd almost Soca track from Elephant Man, who looks more or less like this

all the time. I'm warning you: Don't just GoogleSearch 'elephant man'.
Elephant Man - Elephant Message

Last solo mp3: Princess, of Crime Mob, from her recent 'we're gonna call it a mixtape for cred, but it's really just a normal album' called "Class Is In Session"'.
Princess (of Crime Mob) - Pretty Rave Girl

So that's your newest mix- summery rap cuts, just in time for the weather to maybe stop being really really rotten. Really.
